The remains of a fort have been reported on the rising ground to the E of Loch nan Dunan immediately NE of the road from Staffin to Kilmaluag (Miket 1990). Described as comprising two enclosures separated by an outcrop some 12m high, it is difficult to identify its position on the available satellite imagery, which reveals a broken landscape with extensive traces of post-medieval enclosures. A grass-grown circular structure described in the first of the enclosures is probably that visible at NG 46850 70645. The measurements for this enclosure are given as 35m from N to S by 28m transversely and the wall as 2m in thickness; the entrance is placed on the W. The remains of the other enclosure are much slighter, and it seems more likely that this at least is part of the post-medieval field-system. Confirmation of its form and character will require further fieldwork.
