Summary

This small fortification is situated on a wooded, steep-sided promontory formed between the E bank of the Arngibbon Burn and one of its tributaries W of Wester Arngibbon steading. Subrectangular on plan, the interior measures 41m from NW to SE by at least 21m transversely (0.08ha), and though there is no trace of any defences along the NE and SW margins of the promontory, access at either end is blocked by a substantial rampart. That on the NW, the more difficult line of approach, forms a scarp up to 2.4m in height externally, while across the gentle and easy SE line there is a massive earthen bank about 12m in thickness by 2.5m in height, with an external ditch 5.5m in breadth by about 0.6m in depth externally. The entrance is probably between the NE end of the rampart at this end and the margin of the promontory, which is the route taken by a more recent track that crosses the otherwise featureless and overgrown interior.
